You pass the hall and enter what appears to be the
library.. Books are everywhere.. On the large desk before you, on the
floor all around, not to mention the shelves are crammed with books..
You gaze around in absolute wonder at the huge mess. Never have you seen
so many books. Surely the knowledge contained in them would help solve
some of the mysteries you encountered in the mansion. You move further
into the room, the rug under your feet full of holes and dust.. Making your way along the side of the table, you look up at the shelves, wondering if you should read any of these.. Maybe you will.. Choose a book. WARNING: These books contain many secrets. (Spoiler Alert!)
After you've sated yourself on the knowledge from the book, you sit back
in the chair at the desk and sigh heavily. It all makes sense now. This
mansion, the mysterious Turk, the Jenova Project, Project G and what Dr.
Lucrecia Crescent had put herself through in the name of science. You
look back to the shelves, perhaps to read a bit more, when you notice a
strange book, purple in color, it seems very out of place. |
When Jenova was discovered buried in the ice of the Northern Crater, it was first thought that it was the remains of the lost race of the Cetra. The discovery was hailed as the century’s greatest scientific find and many plans were made to reap the potential benefits of this discovery. It wasn’t until several questionable experiments had been carried out that it was discovered that Jenova was no Cetra, but an alien that came to destroy the plant in ancient times. |
The project's ultimate goal was to produce a child who could lead Shinra to the Ancients' Promised Land. Dr. Lucrecia Crescent offered up her unborn child as the core subject for the experiment. She was injected with Jenova cells and later gave birth to Sephiroth. Alternatively, Gillian Hewley was also injected with Jenova cells by Dr. Hollander for his Project G. The results were Angeal Hewely, Gillian’s biological son, and Genesis Rhapsodos who was injected with Gillian’s cells while he was still in a fetal state. |
Hojo hypothesized that when Jenova's cells are separated, they will instinctively attempt to join back together, and human hosts carrying Jenova's cells will likewise be compelled to gather together. Hojo had the survivors of the Nibelheim Incident, as well as Cloud Strife and Zack Fair, injected with samples of Sephiroth's cells, turning them into Sephiroth Clones. |
After the events of the Nibelheim Incident, Professor Hojo rounded up the survivors of Sephiroth's rampage. He injected them with Jenova Cells and exposed them to Mako Energy, similar, if not identical, to the creation of a SOLDIER. However, these people were not the finest in physical and mental fitness, thus they could not keep their own egos and became shades of Jenova. Since Jenova was a puppet of Sephiroth, the Clones too became fanatics who would do anything for their master Sephiroth. Those that were proper slaves were engraved with a number someplace on their bodies, those that failed and kept some shred of their egos were left to die. Cloud Strife would have been a success as well had Zack not intervened and rescued him from the Shinra Mansion. Zack, also a Sephiroth Clone, was a total failure. He seems to not have been mentally affected by the experiment at all due to previously being unaffected by the identical SOLDIER procedure. |
In the end, only Cloud survived the journey to the Northern Crater. All the others died on the way. Because Cloud was simply a semi-failure, he had his own mind and ego, but Sephiroth could take complete control of him at will. |
Of the many scientsts that worked for the Shinra Science and Development department, these are the few that stood out as the key researchers. Click a name to view their profile. |

The Deepground facility underneath Midgar was built at the same time the Shinra Headquarters. At this time, the facility was merely a medical lab for wounded SOLDIER members, and to house Mako Reactor 0 to power the facility and the Shinra Building above it. When Genesis Rhapsodos was born, his potential sparked a series of increasingly extreme and immoral experiments using his genes in Deepground.

Stated in the Omega Reports, Chaos was first described in an ancient Cetra tablet. Later, a team of scientists that included Grimoire Valentine and Lucrecia Crescent found a small pool of tainted Lifestream within the Crystal Cave, hypothesizing that Chaos would arrive here at the destined time, and later excavated the Protomateria from its depths. With samples of the Mako and the newly discovered Protomateria brought back for experimentation, Grimoire died in an experiment associated with the discovery. Shinra used the tainted Mako in an attempt to create stronger SOLDIERs within Deep Ground, which resulted in the birth of Nero the Sable. The scientific investigation of Chaos and Omega later comes to a complete stop when other scientists dismiss and criticize Lucrecia's report. |
During the initial proceedings of the Jenova Project, Vincent Valentine confronted Hojo about using humans in his experiments; namely Lucrecia. Hojo shot Vincent due to his meddling and began to experiment on his body. This left Vincent weak and near death on the basement operating table. As a last resort to rehabilitate him, Lucrecia infused the Chaos-tainted Mako into Vincent’s broken-down body. The procedure worked, as Vincent's body, due to Hojo's previous experiments, was strong enough to become a vessel for Chaos; however, Chaos was completely uncontrollable and was only stopped when the Protomateria had a reaction to Chaos. |
The migrations of the Cetra were a Planet-reverent pursuit of the fabled Promised Land, one conducted by traveling from one area to another and cultivating life as they went. The Cetra had the unique ability to commune with the Planet, an ability which regular humans lost once they gave up their close relationship with the Planet in favor of leisure and convenience. Cetra also had the ability to guide the flow of the Planet's spiritual energy, this being the means by which they were able to cultivate life on the Planet's surface. |
By the time Gast realized that Jenova was no Ancient, the damage had already been done. Numerous experiments using Jenova’s cells had already been performed. Gast left the project and sometime later, actually met a real Cetra. She was Iflana and she went into hiding with Professor Gast. Eventually they had a daughter, Aerith, but happiness was fleeting. Professor Hojo showed up one fateful evening and killed his former superior. He kidnapped Iflana and Aerith, taking to the Shinra Headquarters where they would remain for the next seven years. |
1st Class Soldiers Sephiroth and Zack Fair were sent to investigate the sudden appearance of monsters in Nibelheim. Accompanying them were two other lower rank Soldiers, one being Cloud Strife. They travel to the mako reactor located in the Nibel Mountains and put a stop to the monsters. While there, Sephiroth discovers that he has a connection to a being discovered in the reactor who has the same name as his mother, Jenova. |
Even after most of its body had been destroyed, Jenova's remains continued to survive. In fact, its destruction actually allowed Jenova's cells to enter the Lifestream as the bodies infected with its cells would return to the Planet. Jenova's cells ended up infecting thousands who came into contact with them during the time Lifestream washed over the Planet to help destroy the Meteor. This infection with Jenova manifested as the plague Geostigma, caused when the human body overcompensates to try to eliminate the cells leading to the development of sores and scars. |
Gast drew the wrongful conclusion that Jenova was a Cetra, and Shinra sent Hojo and Lucrecia Crescent to assist him in his research to create the Jenova Project. His research led Hojo to inject Lucrecia with Jenova cells, in order to make a new race of Cetra through Hojo and Lucrecia's unborn child. This child was called Sephiroth. Gast, however, left the project upon discovering that Jenova was not in fact a Cetra. Gast continued his research on the Cetra in his laboratory in Icicle Inn, where he met Ifalna, the last remaining Cetra. The two later had a child, Aerith. But happiness was not to remain when they were tracked down by Professor Hojo who killed Gast and kidnapped Ifalnia and Aerith. |
He was sent to Professor Gast to assist with Project S and when Gast left, he took the project over. Professor Hojo was the lead executive for the Shinra Company’s science division as well as the creator, and father, of Sephiroth. Stopping at nothing to upstage Dr. Hollander, Hojo wasted no time in finding an unborn child to become his guinea pig. Injecting Jenova cells into the fetus carried by Dr. Lucrecia Crescent, he had no remorse for the detrimental effects that would plague Lucrecia for the rest of her life. When confronted by the Turk that had come to protect them while they worked, he callously shot the man and experimented on his body. To keep him from dying, Lucrecia put a special material into the man’s body. It saved him, but also had severe adverse effects. |
The leader of Project G, he set out to create a race of super humans. Being a rival to Professor Hojo, Dr. Hollander felt the pressure to outdo him and create beings that would rival his Project S. His experiments gave life to Angeal, Genesis and Deep Ground. Later on, Dr. Hollander injected himself with Genesis cells and begins to experience degradation much like Angeal and Genesis. To put a stop to this, he seeks out the last successful clone from Project S as he carries Jenova’s cells in his body and it will stop the degradation. Dr. Hollander did not make it to the clone, instead dying in a battle against Zack Fair. |
Once a Shinra scientist, worked as an assistant to Vincent's father Grimoire Valentine. During the time spent with Grimoire, they discovered two Weapons developed by The Planet, both used as part as the Lifestream's emergency function. Together, Grimoire and Lucrecia were able to discover the Crystal Cave, where it was thought Chaos would awaken at the appointed time. Grimoire, however, was killed in an attack by the newly discovered Chaos, and Lucrecia's research was discarded as pure nonsense. |
He was Vincent’s father and the man who worked on the discovery of Chaos and Omega with Lucrecia Crescent. However, he was killed when an experiment during his research went wrong and he shielded Lucrecia from the blast.
This is what caused the guilt felt by Lucrecia, causing her to distance herself from Vincent. During the discovery of Chaos and Omega, he and his team stumbled upon a stagnation of Lifestream found onsite. Scientists took this information and took the stagnation and put it into children about to be born. However they did not know how it was going to turn out, and though they did a few hundred experiments, there was only one experiment that was successful — Nero the Sable. |
While working with Shinra's science department, met with Dr. Hollander and became a part of his experiment. While he was still in Shinra, Hollander was trying to surpass Professor Hojo by being the first to create a human with the powers of the Cetra. This experiment was named "Project Gillian". As a subject of this experiment, Gillian Hewley was infused with Jenova cells. When she became pregnant, the result was Angeal Hewley. |
Sephiroth was born to Professor Hojo and Lucrecia Crescent as part of the Jenova Project. Before Sephiroth's birth, Hojo and Lucrecia were working as assistants to Professor Gast, Shinra Electric Power Company's top scientist, on the Jenova Project. The project studied the remains of an extra-terrestrial entity known as Jenova, who was mistakenly thought to be one of the Cetra, an ancient people that had the power to "talk to the Planet". Hojo injected cell samples from Jenova into the pregnant Lucrecia and her unborn baby. Lucrecia carried Sephiroth to term, his fetal form merging with the Jenova cells as he developed. |
After being dispatched by Cloud, Sephiroth hibernated in the Lifestream for five years before resurfacing. Those that Hojo had injected with Jenova cells began to whisper about ‘reunion’ and sought out the former 1st Class Soldier. Unbeknownst to him, Cloud was drawn to him as well, under the guise of revenge for the events in Nibelheim. |
Born from Gillian as a result of Project G, Angeal was the first 'successful' copy. He grew up in Banora, a town known for its vast apple orchards. He was also best friends with Genesis, another copy that was created when he was injected with Gillian Hewley's cells before he was born. Angeal eventually joined Soldier and eventually made it to 1st Class along with Genesis and Sephiroth. He takes on a young Soldier whom he trains and mentors; this young man was Zack Fair. After certain key events, Angeal later deserted from Shinra in order to gain Genesis's trust and bring him back. However, because his body rapidly changed him into a monster, Angeal desired to be killed and thus was dispatched by Zack. |
Initially a loyal SOLDIER member who wishes to prove himself a hero like Sephiroth, Genesis begins to suffer from genetic degradation due to his imperfect infusion of Jenova's cells, and leads a rebellion against Shinra with the intent to find a cure. Genesis was born from the result of Jenova Project G, lead by Dr. Hollander. Gillian Hewley was injected with Jenova's cells, and her cells were then transplanted into Genesis with the plan this would grant him Jenova's abilities. After Genesis' birth, Professor Hojo's "Project S" which created Sephiroth was deemed superior, and Project G was shut down. Unknown to Hojo and Hollander, the Project G research would continue in Deepground. Genesis was labeled a failed experiment and given to a wealthy landlord in Banora to be raised. He has since gone into seclusion beneath Midgar. |
The director of Soldier, and illegitimate son of President Shinra. Lazard grew up in the slums and so truly knows about being downtrodden. For reasons not entirely known, he injected himself with Angeal’s cells and became an Angeal clone. As degradation set in, he was compelled to help Zack and does so until his last breath. |
Born in the town of Gongaga, had childhood dreams of joining SOLDIER to become a 1st Class like the legendary Sephiroth. At the age of thirteen, Zack left Gongaga, without even telling his parents, and joined the Shinra's military forces. He is mentored by Angeal Hewley, a 1st Class Soldier. But after the war with Wutai, he is swept up into the mystery surrounding Angeal’s supposed desertion and the effects of Project G. |
A youth with dreams of joining Soldier, Cloud left his hometown of Nibelheim when he was of age. Despite being unable to attain his dream, he found a close friend in Zack Fair. After the Nibelheim Incident, Zack pulled Cloud, sick with mako poisoning, from the town and the two escaped the nightmare that was Professor Hojo’s Jenova Project. However, on the outskirts of Midgar, they were tracked by Soldier and Zack was gunned down. Cloud managed to pull himself into Midgar, deliriously out of his mind. He collapsed at the train station where he remained until discovered by his childhood friend, Tifa. |
When he was still in the Turks, he was assigned to supervise the Jenova Project in Nibelheim, he fell in love with a scientist named Lucrecia Crescent, an assistant to Gast Faremis. When he discovered her link to his deceased father, Grimoire Valentine, Lucrecia distanced herself from Vincent, ultimately entering a relationship with her associate, Professor Hojo, instead. Lucrecia became pregnant afterward, and Hojo planned to use the fetus as a test subject for the Jenova Project.
Vincent objected to the use of humans as test subjects. |
Lucrecia performed a last ditch experiment on Vincent using a unique material. It worked and he was brought back from the brink of death. Vincent later awakened on the operating table and responded to his modified body with both anguish and rage. |
